One of the most important artists of the Baroque, Luca Giordano was a disciple of José de Ribera in Naples, and of Pietro da Cortona in Rome. Despite the great fame he enjoyed during his life, it did not last after his death; however, the monograph published in 1966 by Oreste Ferrari and Giuseppe Scavizzi marked the definitive recovery of the artist, who today is recognized for his great creative capacity. In this large canvas we can observe the clear influence of his first teacher Ribera, especially in the marked chiaroscuro and the monumentality of the scene. The composition represents the episode from the Gospel of Saint Luke (22:63-65), in which several soldiers insulted Christ through beatings and insults, after having been condemned by Pontius Pilate.
