    Oil on marble.
Given the spread of these works in Rome between the 16th and 17th centuries and the multitude of Italian and foreign artists active in the Eternal City at the time, attributing these delicate pieces of art is nowadays a daunting task. The manner of describing the vegetation with meticulous details recalls the style of Johann König (circa 1586-1642), a German painter active in Rome during those years and an experimenter with various supports. It could therefore be the work of an artist from his circle, not too experienced, as demonstrated by the thickness of the pictorial veil. It is possible that the creation coincides with the years of the Saint's canonization, between 1614 and 1616, a period in which the iconography spread and enjoyed greater popularity.
