Trained first in Madrid and then in Brussels, where he would come into contact with the groups L'Essor and Les XX, the main Belgian cultural movements at the end of the century, Regoyos resided in the Basque country since the 1880s. He held his first individual exhibition in the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris in 1897, and the second in Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona (1898). Regoyos represents the most direct link between the art of our country and the generators of European artistic modernity.
In this painting we see the Pla de la Boqueria, located right in the middle of Las Ramblas in Barcelona. In Regoyos' painting the different trends that make up his style can be observed, from the pointillism of Seurat to the symbolism of Gauguin. Considered a post-impressionist master, his mastery of light in the landscape is masterful. Darío de Regoyos settled in Barcelona in 1911, where he would reside the last two years of his life.
