- This sculpture of the Virgin and Child, dated circa 1340, is carved in polychromed and gilded alabaster and is attributed to the Sant Joan de les Abadesses workshop. The figure of the Virgin is presented standing, holding the Child on her left, with a treatment of the garments characterized by sinuous folding and the rhythmic fall of the mantle. The work preserves traces of its original polychromy and detailed carving on the crown and tunic, following the models of Catalan Gothic sculpture from the first half of the 14th century, which were heavily influenced by Northern French workshops.
The work has a documented provenance that includes the collections of Oleguer Junyent and Lluís Plandiura and has been referenced in academic literature by authors such as Duran i Sanpere and Josep Gudiol Cunill. Formal analysis links this piece to the stone altarpieces of the period, where the combination of alabaster and gilding sought a specific luminosity within the liturgical context. This image exemplifies the consolidation of a devotional typology that balances late Romanesque frontality with the emerging naturalism of the international Gothic style.
