- In the presented painting can be observed the influence of French academicism and of Pellicer’s artistic mentor. In the French academic tradition and according to the taste of the Salons, the female figure was always associated to either a historical-mythological subject, or to a portrait of an existing person. In order to be represented nude, woman was always a protagonist of a story, myth or legend, nonetheless Pellicer gives a portrait of an anonymous young woman, testifying of a possibly newly emerging taste. It is safe to assume this painting is a result of a class with a living model, held for young artists to study the facial features, textures and colourings, as guided or inspired by the mentor in the choice of composition, subject and execution.
