  The drawing we present, published in the artist's catalogue raisonné, is a sketch to be interpreted as an exercise from which one can deduce the artist's working method, the flow of his ideas, and his spontaneous way of fixing them on paper. Here, he studies and reflects on profiles, grimaces, and expressions but also practices the watercolour technique. Worked on both sides, it is a unique and intimate testimony of one of the most popular artists of 19th-century French realism.
