- George Valmier was a French painter and writer, associated with the movement of geometric abstractionism. He was one of the leading figures of the group of artists known as Abstraction-Creation, which sought to explore the formal qualities of art and eliminate representational elements.
This work is an example of the artist's mastery of the collage technique, which he pioneered. It reveals his interest in exploring the relationships between form, colours, and space. Valmier's collages are characterized by the use of simple shapes and bright colours. Circles, squares, and triangles were often used to create compositions that were both balanced and dynamic, along with the juxtaposition of contrasting colours to give a sense of movement and energy within the work. Valmier's collages often incorporate found objects, such as newspaper clippings and scraps of paper, as well as printed or drawn patterns and textures, an invention, this last one, which can be seen in our piece. These elements add a sense of texture and complexity to the work, while also referencing the everyday world beyond the confines of the artwork. Another notable aspect of Valmier's collages is the use of symmetry and repetition. The composition is perfectly balanced, with shapes and colours repeated in a precise and deliberate manner.
