    Oil on Bardiglio marble.
The original model, possibly the copperplate painting by Girolamo Muziano (Brescia, 1532 - Rome, 1592), gained widespread popularity through the engravings by Cornelis Cort. This accounts for the numerous copies of the composition on various mediums executed by different artists, such as, also, the one by Hans Rottenhammer (Munich, 1564 – Augsburg, 1625) now preserved in the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City.
All these circumstances make very difficult the attribution of this kind of objects. Patrizia Cavazzini, curator of the exhibition in the Galleria Borghese, has suggested the circle of Cavalier d’Arpino, possibly his younger brother Bernardino, due to the stylistic resemblance to the altarpiece portraying The miraculous catch of fish in Sant'Angelo a Pescheria, Rome, dated 1619.
