Based on the available information, especially the labels on the back of the painting from its previous provenance, it appears that the depicted figure is Augustine Hamon (1862 – 1945), a notable French socialist-anarchist, later communist editor, translator, and writer specializing in philosophy and social psychology. Notably, Muter, alongside her Polish associates, was known for her commitment to the socialism cause.
In our painting, Hamon is depicted in a thoughtful pose, although he looks relaxed, but with an intimidatory face expression. Muter used oil and sand, as she pays careful attention to details, illustrating the lines on Hamon's face. The background of the artwork is deliberately kept simple, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on Hamon's expressive features. Muter's brushstrokes, simultaneously robust and refined, adeptly capture the dynamic facets of her subject's personality.
