- This lustreware charger, produced in Manises during the second half of the 15th century, features a central decoration of a rampant lion. The animal is horizontally bisected by a line that creates a play of positive and negative contrasts: the upper portion is drawn in golden lustre against the white ground, while the lower part is rendered in reserve against a metallic field. The rim is organised into eight zones of vertical bands alternating chequered patterns and spirals, separated by "cordoncillo" borders.
The reverse of the piece stands out for its representation of a boar surrounded by vegetal motifs reminiscent of fern fronds, executed with spontaneous brushwork over the white glaze. This type of double-sided ornamentation is a technical feature reserved for the most ambitious productions of the Valencian workshops of the period. The work documents the evolution of Mudéjar aesthetics toward models that integrate heraldic iconography with high-precision pictorial execution in the control of metallic lustre.
