"Study of the head of a man", even though it can't be properly categorised as a portrait, reveals the in-depth work that the artist used to carry out for preparation of his finished paintings. We can appreciate Rosales's ease in the representation of expressions, a skill sharpened in his prolific work as a portraitist. The artist was capable to capture the expression of the subject with an agile, emotive and synthetic brushstroke. Despite being an unfinished canvas, the detail with which he describes the face is impressive. The man has his gaze turned down and his cheeks are coloured by a blush typical of the onset of emotion. Realism is accentuated by the effects of light, a legacy of Velazquez. The Prado Museum preserves a work by Eduardo Rosales titled "Study of the head of an evangelist" with many similarities with the one presented here.
