Biografia
Yolanda Tabanera was born in Madrid in 1965. She studied Literature and Fine Arts in Madrid and Munich, and graduated from the Kunstakademie in Munich in 1992.
Her work is highly introspective, centred in a visionary investigation of an interior space which, when exteriorised, is converted into a personal language. The artist approaches, in a subtle and metaphorical manner, themes that are profoundly important in human existence, such as fragility and the transcendence of the human body, its grandeur and its mortality. Yolanda Tabanera conceptualises the development of her objectual poetics through a creative process which flows from the drawing to the object to the installation. Essential in this process is the work with very diverse materials connected through artisanal techniques and processes, from ceramics, esparto and glass to leather and precious metalwork. Tabanera explores the expressivity and the power of these materials, endowing them with a singular life, approximating the aura of liturgical and ritual objects.
From 1996 she has carried out individual exhibitions in galleries and museums, including Fundación Eugenio Granell, Santiago de Compostela (2002), Museo Barjola, Gijón (2006), Kunsthalle Bellevue Saal, Wiesbaden (2010), CEART, Fuenlabrada (2013), MAVA, Alcorcón (2014) and has participated in numerous collective exhibitions in locations such as the Mori Museum, Tokyo (2006), sala Alcalá 31, Madrid (2007), Fundación Antonio Pérez, Cuenca (2009), Kunstverein Eislingen (2006) or in the exhibition Desesculturas curated by Miguel Cereceda in the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid and the Fundación Capa in Alicante (2002).
Since 2003 she exhibits at the Galeria van de Loo in Munich. She is represented in Madrid by the following galleries: Utopía Parkway (1999–2004), Travesía Cuatro (2005–2009) and Fernando Latorre (2009-2014) where she has organised individual and collective exhibitions. She participates in art fairs such as ARCO, ART COLOGNE, art KARLSRUHE and MACO. She does large-scale installations, some of them permanent ones, and interventions in places such as Horno de la Ciudadela, Pamplona (2002), Maximiliansforum, Munich (2003), Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid (2004), Monasterio de Santa María la Real, Nájera (2005), and Kunstakademie, Trier (2007). In addition, she participates in the itinerant collective exhibition Las formas del alma curated by Susana Blas in the Instituto Cervantes in Prague, inaugurated in their central headquarters in Madrid.
Tabanera has numerous publications and catalogues of her exhibitions, as well as a book of short texts and poems, Cara Ceguera, published by the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
She currently lives and works in Madrid.
