The earliest record of the antiquarian Artur Ramon dates from 1926 when an avant-garde journal published in Sitges, L’Amic de les Arts, highlighted a career spanning over eighty years and four generations, all bearing the same name.
In 1940, Artur Ramon i Garriga, who hailed from a family of antiquarians, set up his business on Barcelona’s Carrer de la Palla 25. The antiquities in the establishment were a mix of sculpture, furniture, objects, paintings and drawings. Indeed, the Galeria Arturo Ramon (1973–1976) heralded the establishment’s first endeavours towards a revival in artists from the past and the gallery business.
The Sala d’art Artur Ramon was founded in 1988. It was unique and unheard of at the time for an antiquarian gallery to promote collectionism and rescue forgotten artists and artworks, earning it the ACCA prize that same year. The present gallery has a track record of over twenty years and a hundred and fifty exhibitions. It has become a unique yardstick and holds a privileged position in the city’s art collecting world.
In 2001 Artur Ramon was restructured into four specialist areas—antiquarian, art collection, old masters and contemporary art. In the process, the establishment was extended to two neighbouring galleries on Carrer de la Palla, numbers 10 and 10 bis.
Ever since its inception, the Artur Ramon gallery has become consolidated as a paradigmatic business in the art sector. The firm is headed by Artur Ramon i Picas, its chairman and the son of its founder, in conjunction with his other son, Artur and his daughter, Mònica, while Jordi Umbert heads the art collection gallery. |
